Britain given HUGE boost as Belgium goes for F35 fighter jets - leaving Macron FURIOUS

BRITAIN has been given a £400m boost by Belgium’s decision to purchase 34 new F35 fighter jets. While the new planes are mainly built by US defence giant Lockheed Martin the UK - its only 'tier one' partner - has a 15 per cent stake in every aircraft sold.

Sales so far have already reaped a £13bn pay day for 500 companies across the UK, ranging from large defence contractors to SMEs, and 20 years’ worth of future orders.

Belgian PM Charles Michel said on Thursday he'd chosen the F35 over the Eurofighter Typhoon - developed by Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain - because it was cheaper.

Costs have decreased by 60 per cent since it was first unveiled.

But the decision was condemned by furious French President Emanuel Macron as being “against European interests”.
Jean-Dominique Giuliani, of the European Robert Schuman Foundation think-tank added: “It's worse than a slap - it is dreadful for European defence” because the F-35 requires a whole maintenance and operational system that depends "on the control of the United States.”

While the UK has a larger - 35 per cent - stake in the Eurofighter, only 623 have been ordered so far.

Lockheed Martin, by contrast, had already sold 3,500 F35s to 13 nations and Belgium’s decision puts it in good company with Nato allies including the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Canada and Australia.

Britain’s has already bought 48 F35Bs - the more expensive vertical-take-off-and-landing variant – for its new aircraft carriers and they are currently undergoing trials on GMS Queen Elizabeth in the US.

Another 90 of the cheaper A variant are planned.

Lockheed Martin spokesman Robert Gage said: “The value of the F-35 is unmatched. From a capability perspective it is a generational leap ahead of legacy aircraft.

"And now that we’ve reduced the unit cost so significantly, it delivers significantly more capability at the same or less cost than its rivals.

"All this, while also providing tremendous industrial opportunities to both the US and UK for a very long and significant production run.”

Big thing for me from that article is the dramatic reduction on cost per F-35 being produced, since they first announced the type all that time ago.
