Very sad outcome, I wonder if it would have been better if they had flown straight ahead?

Believe 2nd person has succumbed. Apparently they were in a critical condition when rescued. FE was also ex SAAF.

Terrible circumstances and it seems ran out of altitude.

The 2nd casualty is believed to have been someone on the ground. Was actually quite a horrific accident if you have a look at the factory they carved up on the way in. Very sad indeed this accident.

From the post crash pictures there was little fire damage. Was this due to the nature of a test flight where you take on limited fuel?

The actual nature of the flight isn't clear. There were 19 people on board and suitcases noted in the pictures of the wreckage (test flight?) but if they had minimum fuel reserves then the plane shouldn't have been too heavy to not maintain altitude on one engine.

Latest is that it was not a test flight. Apparently in the media report issued by the authorities, her next stop was Pilansburg.

Post maintenance test flights should never have pax on board who are not directly involved with evaluating the maintenance.

Maybe they were all off to Sun City for a farewell party. I still wonder if the outcome would have been different if they flew straight ahead and landed on a road or open field or even the old ODI airstrip (if it is still usable)?

Statement from Qantas about Convair accident in South Africa

We were deeply upset to learn that two Qantas pilots, one current and one retired, were onboard the vintage aircraft involved in an accident in South Africa on Tuesday. They are currently in hospital being treated for serious injuries.

This news has shocked the Qantas pilot community and everyone’s thoughts are with the families. We’ve reached out and are providing whatever support we can.

The aircraft involved was a 64 year old Convair CV-340.

Both men have flown Qantas for more than 30 years, including as A380 Captains, with a combined 37,000 hours of flying experience.

The preliminary accident report was said to be released by SACAA within a month. This report may add a few more details to the possible causes contributing to the accident.
