Thanks again Mr. Bell!

After arrival at Riga I had some time to spend but not really enough to venture into town, so obviously I decided to have a look at the Aviation Museum at the airport. Sadly there was no one around to let me in so had to peek through the fence. Pretty messy place but with a fine selection of Cold War relics.

Red34 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25RBS Foxbat-D - a fairly late reconnaissance version of the legendary Foxbat

CCCP-31449 Mil Mi-4 Hound Aeroflot - given the colour likely been active in the Arctic.

Back inside the Terminal I could snap a pics of the Museums Tu-134A-3 - former Aeroflot RA-65717.

B-8319 Airbus A319-115CJ of Chinese SANY Group was parked up. The Vim tail behind is that of VP-BVS that had a runway excursion on 17 February and haven't flown since it seems.

YL-CSG Bombardier C-series CS300, here departing to Brussels but back in time to take me to Thessaloniki some 6 hours later. Not even a month old on this day.

That old Russian iron is amazing to see. I am always surprised at just how big those aircraft types were that they built. No monkeying around

But sadly the Airbus 319 looks like it has had its front kicked in - that short version of the type always looks just a bit silly :haha:

Most things look silly next to proper soviet metal :bingo:

Anyway deep into the night I was ready for the next leg. YL-CSG Bombardier C-Series CS300 airBaltic from Riga to Thessaloniki in Greece.

Fairly empty flight - a good thing given this was the second night on an aircraft in just 3 days.

The small mobile sized screen overhead - for safety video etc.

My next flight to Kalamata was very early morning so spent some dark hours at Thessaloniki Macedonia Airport

Never heard of this one before - YR-AVR BAe 146-300 Aviro Air was parked in the dark
ImageYR-AVR_09Sep17-SKG by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Also the cool looking Greek commuter - SX-DIQ ATR 42-320 Astra
ImageSX-DIQ_09Sep17-SKG by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Also my plane for the next leg was there - SX-OBC Bombardier DHC-8-Q402 Dash 8 Olympic Air
ImageSX-OBC_09Sep17-SKG by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

The early departure as seen from the window
ImageSX-OBC_09Sep17-inflight by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

And finally on the ground in Kalamata - still SX-OBC Bombardier DHC-8-Q402 Dash 8 Olympic Air
ImageSX-OBC_09Sep17-KLX by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Lots of interesting aircraft at Kalamata, T-2 Buckeyes and T-37 Tweety Birds, but far from the terminal and Greece is not the place to pull the big camera out to photograph military aircraft. Anyway my next aircraft soon arrived. Probably the rarest aircraft on the trip, SX-OAX ATR 42-600 Olympic Air
ImageSX-OAX_09Sep17-KLX by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100 (PW127M) engine - funny it look so different as on the Dash 8 as it is basically the same engine.
ImageSX-OAX2_09Sep17-KLX by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Even a snack on a cup of coffee was served on the 30 minutes flight to Athens
ImageSX-OAX2_09Sep17-safety by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

At Athens there was only time for a quick look around but still managed to catch this classic - HZ-AB3 Boeing 727-2U5(RE)(wl) Al Anwa Aviation
ImageHZ-AB3_09Sep17-SKG by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

That was it before 10 lovely days with no planes in Greece /M :bye1:

I must say, I am  the C-series. The type is growing on me a bit. Love the nose shot on the ramp :sunglasses:

Okay then - just so you don't think I have only planes on my mind :sparkle:

Compulsory visit to the Acropolis (at least for me as a first timer to Athens and Greece). The main bit was packed in scaffolding, but this shed was a reasonable backdrop.
ImageAcropolis_10Sep17-Athens by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Even tried out some other form of transportation, the smoke reminded me of the days with 707s and the like :crazy1:
ImageFerry_16Sep17-Poros-Piraeus by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

On the 7th day I somewhat unexpectedly ran into an airshow - separate topic from that at a later stage. invited by the British we got to met the guys from Red Arrows, while most where busy posing I was naturally busy talking airplanes :stupid2:
ImageRedArrows_17Sep17-Tanagra by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

After another couple boat trips it was time to get back in the air again. First a for very short 20 minute flight from Mykonos to Athens on SX-DGJ Airbus A320-214 Aegean Airlines
ImageSX-DGJ_20Sep17-JMK by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Despite the short flight they managed to serve a snack - Aegean branded even
ImageSX-DGJ_20Sep17-snack by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Plane change at Athens before heading further up to Hamburg - another Aegean A320, this time SX-DVI Airbus A320-214 Aegean Airlines
ImageSX-DVI_20Sep17-ATH by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Climbing out above Greece
ImageSX-DVI_20Sep17-inflight by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

This being a longer 2h40m flight they even brought out a meal and a Greek beer 'Alfa'
ImageSX-DVI_20Sep17-meal by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Landing at Hamburg where my parents where waiting to take us back to Denmark for another week of holiday

Michael, love the Floppy Hat look. But then again you need to protect your bland skin :haha: :haha: Acropolis is on my bucket list too

Wing shot over Greece is lovely and that food doesn't look half bad. And lucky to have met the Red Arrows team

All that was missing 407 was the coffee machine on the end of the workbench, sorry office table.

Short continuation of the trip report today with little aviation content :yikes:

In Denmark we went looking for other flying creatures. And what do you do in a country with bad weather and too much money? Apparently you build an interactive indoor birding experience :crazy1:
ImageIndoor_birding_Vadehavcentret by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

With improving weather we also managed to get out and find some real birds. Here one of several flocks of thousands of Starling getting ready to head south.
ImageOutdoor_birding by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

We also passed the workshop of the museum at local Airbase (Skydstrup AFB). Former Danish Air Force A-603 Republic F-84G Thunderjet being prepared for gate guard duties.
ImageA-603_21Sep17-EKSP by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Outside were some parts of the diminishing Danish F-16 fleet. In foreground special coloured Thor's Hammer tail of former 727 Squadron General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcon E-199. In the back the sad remains of two-seater F-16B ET-206.
ImageE-199_21Sep17-EKSP by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

We also had time to try out other means of transportation. Even found a nice day to do it :cool2:
ImageSailing2 by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

A few days later wife was returning to RSA, so after dropping her off at terminal in Billund I found this nice Hawker between the hangars. OY-JBJ Hawker 800 XPi JoinJet
ImageOY-JBJ_24Sep17-BLL by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

Next up - DC-3 Dakota /M :bye1:

I think we would tend to disagree GD, all those pictures have something to do with "flying" in them. Even the sailing one is "flying" across the water. Wonderful pics of some out of the way interesting things :good: :good: :good:
