Pilot dead as fire-fighting helicopter crashes on NSW South Coast

A helicopter being used in the bushfire fighting effort on the NSW South Coast has crashed, killing the pilot.

A spokesman for NSW Ambulance said it was believed the waterbombing helicopter crashed "into a tree" at Woodstock, near Ulladulla.

NSW Police said their resources were en route.

The NSW Rural Fire Service confirmed at 2pm that "a serious incident" had occured "involving one of its contracted waterbombing helicopters working on a bush fire in the Shoalhaven area".

All aircraft in the area have reportedly been grounded in the wake of the incident.
The ambulance spokesman said its crews had been called to the corner of Plot Road and Kingiman Road, west of Ulladulla. Fire and Rescue NSW has a crew on the scene assisting.

It’s understood nearby naval base HMAS Albatross is also providing assistance.

Helicopter crashed in the area I’m pointing to while bombing the Kingiman Fire.

Firefighters have been battling to get the Kingiman bushfire under control since Wednesday when it threatened homes in the Ulladulla area and destroyed almost a dozen outbuildings.

It's one of three major bushfires on the state's South Coast that have destroyed and threatened properties in the past few days.

The worst damage so far has been from the bushfire further south at Bemboka, near Bega, where the RFS confirmed three homes were lost on Wednesday.

While conditions have eased since Wednesday's emergency, firefighters have been working to contain the fires before gusty winds return to the region on Saturday.

When performing a helicopter bucket dump my gut feeling is that the exit after the drop must be carefully planned to avoid the "hot and thin" air that would reduce lift.
