Emirates - Air Seychelles Near miss 14 July

#1

Post by happyskipper » Sun Jul 16, 2017 4:24 pm

On 14th July 2017, Emirates 703 (EK703) an Airbus A380-861 from Dubai (DXB) to Mauritius (MRU) was cruising at an altitude of 40,000 Feet before requesting descent to Mauritius for Runway 14. Seychelles 054 (HM054) an Airbus A330-243 was leaving Mauritius for Seychelles and given clearance by Mauritius ATC to climb and maintain 37,000 Ft. Upon requesting descent, EK703 was given clearance to descend and maintain 38,000 Ft due to crossing HM054 at time 13:07(UTC). EK703 read back Flight Level 360 (36,000 Ft) to Mauritius ATC instead of Flight Level 380 (38,000 Ft).

Thanks HS, interesting one that. Lucky for all involved. TCAS worked well though although I don't think it would have been too comfortable on-board the Seychelles flight for a bit of time :negative:

I suspect that the Air Seychelles guys had started the turn already, after hearing the ATC chatter, and then simply steepened the turn once they had EK visual, and the TCAS was basically unnecessary.

It's difficult to say, as the ATC tape and the FR24 tracks don't appear to be correctly synchronized. But the Seychelles aircraft appeared to turn to the right, and then tightened up the turn - in my view......

Yebo, that's about right. 2000km/h closing speed doesn't give you a lot of time from visual contact to knocking on the pearly gates.

Perfect example of ATC not doing their job properly.

I suppose it all started with the incorrect read-back from EK that was not corrected initially by ATC

I think there was a big lack of situational awareness from EK703. Yes he read back the wrong level cleared too but he got traffic info from ATC telling them they would cross Air Mauritius (FL360) at a certain time. Yet it never clicked.

Ja Moertoe, that is a contributing factor. The primary cause was ATC not listening to the readback. It's an issue with many controllers, as soon they've issued a clearance they start doing something else, like making a call to the next sector, or start writing something, and that action takes their attention away from the listening, they hear but don't listen.

Is it still procedure for ATC to state "Readback correct" and the identity of the aircraft every time a clearance, or amendment to a clearance is issued?

At the very least there should have been some form of acknowledgement, even just a callsign would have sufficed.

Well with EK's non punitive culture, I'll bet they'll be looking for another job.
