Great Moertoe, downloaded Linux umbuntu. Will give it a go (on usb stick) but already know its going to run into some problems with certain programs I use. But I'm sure there will be a way around it.

I ran Ubuntu on my Dell Latitude 630 for a few years but then one or other component packed up. It may well have been the hard drive because I can still run it off of a DVD (very slow) and of course it is then volatile. But I will have to wait until I come back to SA to continue troubleshooting.
I believe Ubuntu 16 is coming out this year.
