Windows 10 Vs Windows 8 Vs Windows 7: What's The Difference?

#1

Post by Raffles » Mon Aug 03, 2015 7:48 am

Windows 10 launched on July 29th and has already been downloaded over 14 million times. But why? Microsoft MSFT +0.00%’s decision to make Windows 10 free plays a big part (especially given warnings to wait) but it is also just the tip of the iceberg.

So let’s weigh up the main differences between Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8. There are a large number of pros but also some significant cons, including a few potential deal breakers...

Read it here...

My advice is to wait a couple of months and let them iron the bugs out.

Also read somewhere that even though they say it will be a free upgrade for users, there actually will be a cost in the future when it is changed to "Windows". Also the whole privacy issue is one for concern. Will report back later :whistlin:

Windows 7

My advice, drop all the "Windows" crap and switch over to Mac or Linux. No viruses or adware or any other crap.

I'm on Linux Ubuntu on one computer already and will possibly move over on all my machines.

The update fiasco is one of the reasons I want to wait.

Well I have taken the plunge over the last weekend. The installation from download to complete install took the whole of my Saturday. 80% of the time on the download of around 3.5GB and the 20% was the actual install process that resulted in several internal reboots as it installed itself. On the final reboot I was impressed that all my desktop icons were still there, as was my wallpaper.

Sunday was spent going through all the drop-down menus and getting to know and understand how it works. To each his own, but there were several features that allowed too much of my data to be sent to Big Brother, so those were then set to OFF. All my programs that were working quite happily under Win 7 Pro, still all worked after the conversion to Windows 10. What I did do was look for the latest drivers for my video card and printer. The video driver especially caught my attention as it was a new release (25 July 2015) specifically for Windows 10.

Now after a few days of use, I can say that the PC does startup quicker, and to date I am a happy chappie. :good:

Thanks for the feedback Propnut. Would kindly ask for your feedback after say a month or so once you have really got to know the system. Would like to know how you feel about it then

Yes I will gladly give feedback in a months time. Maybe a little sooner as we are travelling up to Pretoria on around the 27-28th. I do not have a tablet, smart phone, laptop, even no Wi-Fi or any of these fancy things. I mention that because going through all the menu options yesterday it would appear that Windows 10 is designed to be the centre of a modern lifestyle. It appears willing to "talk" to all the devices via some form of connectivity, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, in a seamless manner. My take on that is if you have a new contact on your laptop, when you get close to the PC the two will sync up.

There are other new features, many of which I do not see myself using, but they are on offer. For example an all new web browser called Microsoft Edge. I have briefly looked at it and it appears to run in conjunction with a companion program called Cortana. Now did not delve too deep into this as I am a strong supporter of Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

Again Microsoft Outlook has been revamped into a new program called Mail. When I went into that I had more questions than answers as it appeared to want to know all about how you connect to Google and other programs. Again I am a Mozilla Thunderbird fan when it comes to e-mail, and it will take an earthquake to make me change to use something else.

Windows 10 also allows you to connect to or through your X-box. Now again I do not have one so I cannot comment on that side, but it supports my theory that Windows 10 is an operating system as well as a connecting conduit for your other mobile devices. So far I am using Windows 10 in its base format, an operating system for my desktop PC. Does it suit my needs? Yes, it starts up with no fuss. It allows me to use my own browser and e-mail programs. Everything that worked in Windows 7 still works in Windows 10, including Open Office and all of my simulation programs and their related hardware.

You can wait for the end of the month for a further update on what I feel regarding Windows 10, but so far for my needs, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

So in other words Windows is copying Apple's features again, just like Samsung and the rest are doing with the mobile devices. I just hope for you Windows users that it will become a more secure platform.

I get the feeling that Microsoft have seen a little bit of light regarding this issue and that the iOS way of doing things is in fact the correct way to go

Just an interim report. Since installing Windows 10 to date I have had no issues. There have been six or seven updates released already, but each has been successful installations. nVidia (I have a 560GTX video card) have also released a second update pack for their video cards since the release of Windows 10. Again both the nVidea updates have been without any problems.

So to date I have no issues running Windows 10 and would recommend the upgrade to anyone still sitting on the fence.

Absolutely no problems with X-Plane or FSX running under Windows 10. That includes all the 3rd-party software as well.

Propnut, I can agree with you regarding Windows 10.

I downloaded it on PC and laptop and I'm using it now for about a month. Absolutely no problem at this stage.

But what you don't see is the spyware hidden in Windows 10.
