London for the day

#1

Post by thabo » Sun Feb 18, 2018 7:38 pm

I'll be in London all day Thursday - flying on Wednesday evening and then driving up to Gateshead on Friday morning and looking for something interesting/beautiful to see.

I've done the tourist thing and hampton court while in college and not inclined to spend an hour on the tube each way into town.

I'll have a car so will be able to drive out and see the countryside.

Any suggestions?

Hi Thabo,

There are so many things to see and do in and around London, is it aviation related things you wish to see?

Not necessarily.
I'm happy to see the country too.

If you have suggestions for things to see on the way between London and Gateshead/Newcastle i'd also be interested

There is a beautiful air museum at Coventry. They have a Vulcan bomber. Coventry should be on your route.

Alton Towers is also close to your route but it is an amusement park.

In London:
Rather than drive in London itself, take a bus (more scenic) or the tube.
Forget about Madame Tussuad's unless you have hours to stand in a queue.
Regent's Park Zoo is a possibility.
The British Museum is good.
Buy something at Harrod's and not far away is Hyde Park.

I'll try dig up some more stuff.

Who said that living in Coventry is like watching a plank warp? :burner: :burner: :burner:

In London the Brooklands Museum for a healthy well presented dose of Aviation and Automobile history - former assembly site of the VC-10 of which the have an former Oman Royal Flight sample open to the Public. As most things in the UK museum is rather expensive at GBP 15 + extra fee to have a look inside their Concorde.

Exhibits include all South African built Alfa Romeo F1 car 'The Assegai' - sadly it never really made it to F1 as it didn't qualify for it maiden race at Kyalami 1962. Project was then dropped. Was at some stage owned by Concorde engineer Peter Ferris, and raced in classic races by Arnout Kok.
