Well back from our little walk in Kruger and as I (and probably also some of you) regularly go to the bush I thought we could use this to share stories and pics.

This time we did the Sweni Wilderness Trail, a three night/two day walking experience. Not really a trail as you stay in the Sweni Camp from where you do two daily walks, morning for around 5 hours and a short 2 hour evening walk. Did the Olifants Wilderness Trail last year and this has now turned into our favorite Kruger actively.

Before the trail we had two night in Tamboti Tented Camp near Orpen, and were treated to two nice Leopard sightings, beside the more usual stuff.

First on just outside camp on Saturday morning

The other at 1 pm Sunday at Girivava waterhole near Satara, seems to be blind on one eye but as it was first seen like this years ago, it seem to manage just fine.

Our first walk turned out to be an adrenalin fueled adventure. Walking along the rivers on an overcast day we saw a few rhinos returning to the safety their waterholes, all good and lots of relaxed hippos seen.
ImageHippos_18Apr16-KNP-walk by Aviation Adventures South Africa, on Flickr

A little later when standing talking about a Buffalo scull were came across, a sound of running large feet were heard and a split-second later a large hippo bull was charging us from the bush some 7 meters away. Our quick reacting guide got us behind him so he could have clear short, meanwhile the back-up guide fired a warning short infront of the hippo. I missed most of this trying to get behind the bush and more importantly the riffles. Next I saw the hippo was side on, 2-3 meters from the guide, now moving away from us but towards the back-up guide a further 7-8 meters away. He stayed cool and fired another warning shot helping the hippo decide to turn away. All this happened in 2-3 seconds and photography was not really a priority at the time. I did catch this of the culprit running off after the second shot.

GD, what a fantastic post. And those pictures of the Leopard are brilliant. So clear. Remind me again of the equipment used?

Walking in the bush on a guided tour is something I have only done once before. Also in the Kruger and we were also charged by a big fat mother of a Hippo  Great experience and just sad we haven't been back in a while.

Over the past 5 years we have frequented the Cathedral Peak area and do enjoy the freedom of your own outdoors. A few pictures below of some different animals and scenes as captured.

Eish, poor chameleon lost its tail! Thanks for sharing. My mikkendruk won't manage such nice shots. I shall have to wait until I am rich to buy a new one.

Good thing that Moertoe asked you to post some pics here as they are wonderful. The young leopard is my favourite :champion:

Eish, those leopard pics are truly spectacular!

My missus showed me a vid taken yesterday morning just above Lourensford farm in Somerset West of a prime age leopard walking down a farm track... There's apparently plenty of them in the mountain area behind Somerset west. I have yet to see one in the flesh though.

Thanks guys. Yes the winter light is pretty nice, but it comes at the price of being frozen to the bones when in an open car :surrender:
