The sky's the limit for RAF photographers capturing action shots of their brave colleagues and the cutting-edge machines that defend our nation in a series of mesmerising images

From a military parachute display team performing high octane aerobatics to a fireman extinguishing a raging airplane fire, these are the nine stunning images shortlisted for a 'People's Choice' RAF photograph contest.

The annual competition, which is voted on by members of the public, was launched today and also includes photographs of the F-35B Lightning II jet, the iconic Red Arrows, and an RAF police dog.

All the images were selected by a team of expert judges from 645 entries by RAF service personnel made up of both professional and amateur snappers.

The nine images being put to the public were chosen by the Royal Photographic Society's President Walter Benzie, the Metro's Picture Editor Luke Brighty, and veteran photographer Emma Cattell.
