Changed Airways

Got this E-mail 'discussion' from a friend in Clarens and told hiim that I'll post it on our forum for probable answers to his confusion.

From Clarens – 0nly noticed this about a month ago and in particular, from our house’s aspect (a touch W of North; deliberately laid out that way by me !) we normally see Jnb/ Pt. Eliz. Traffic quite a distance ‘over there’ and four fingers at arm’s length above the local horizon. E. London stuff goes nearly over the top of us:  Upper Airway Quebec 7 crosses between BHM and Clarens. We’ve been shuffled along it twice on our way to Perth, to catch both the Great Circle route AND the Jetstreams (if any ). Coming back, we generally made landfall over Richards Bay. I don’t think Flightradar24 would help; it’s too compressed.

Graham,
I’ve at last got some gen that sounds reliable, regarding the contrails  we see over us that now seem to bend off to the Left for traffic from E. London heading up to you.

It seems they have altered the hitherto straight-in approach to Heidelberg and the Jo’bg TMA by kinking the airways off twenty degrees or so to Port when traffic is abeam Reitz. There never used to be any sort of beacon at Reitz. My informant is a local man who is a Captain for one of the smaller private airlines in the Middle East; but he would have access to the relevant Notams.

I wonder why they’ve done this? Presumably it helps traffic management in the final approaches to the pair of “ 03’s “ at Smuts but I can’t quite see how.

Incidentally, looking-up on the days when weather patterns are conducive to contrail formation, shows just why airways are 10 miles wide: traffic paints their passage all over the sky, sometimes and for all the world to see! I wonder if any senior Instructors ever think of showing their class of students going through IFR training what the results of their sloppy flying looks like, from the ground?

Your friends can see up to date airways at https://skyvector.com/

They can also see the aeronautical charts for S.A. at the CAA website http://www.caa.co.za/Pages/Aeronautical%20Information/Aeronautical-charts.aspx

Ok...seems my friend from Clarens didn't get a satisfactory answer to his question from the leads you gave me Raffs.

All he wants to know is that if the route from East London via Heidelberg to O.R.T. was altered what was the reason....in his words.... Why the 'kinked' airway seeing from the ground by watching the contrails and no wind in question.......a definite curve could be seen lately.

Is it perhaps due to the lack of beacons or more traffic in the sky.

To answer his question I would recommend that you (anybody) go back to my firs post.

I actually promised him that I would get an explanation from the horse's mouth on one of my favourite forums. Moerie, you haven't flown this route by any chance sometime.

However he does appreciate your feed back Raffs, tnx.

He should look at the standard arrivals charts for ORT

There are many depending on the direction from which you approach the field and the runway in use.

So I will give one example,
Click -> here then select O R Tambo INTL FAOR then he can just click on the PDF files designated "Standard Arrival Chart - STAR"
