Re: Could a NON-PILOT land an airliner?

A few of the members that passed through the sim group eventually went on to get their PPL. The big transition I found in the members was from sim flights on their own to sim flights under ATC control where correct radio procedures were expected. In South Africa they ran a new members night every Th...

Re: Could a NON-PILOT land an airliner?

Well now, to this I disagree. I have over 4000 flight simulator hours on mainly propeller types, not a lot on jets in my Microsoft years. I find the jets too fast for my pensionable brain, so a DC-3 suits me just great, and yes I can also handle Sperry instrumentation. Just on 1000 hours were on-lin...

Re: Virgin Galactic plans to launch space flights from Italy

Now which would be better - a few minutes in sub-orbital on Branson's ride - or a lot of minutes in a U-2

My choice a U-2.

From the post crash pictures there was little fire damage. Was this due to the nature of a test flight where you take on limited fuel?

The incident report in the question of WHY the seat failed to detonate would make a good read.

Am I wrong in thinking that some of the SA Express aircraft are still flying?

Thanks Howie. The B747 may have been the Queen of the Sky, but the A380 will surely qualify as the Lady of the Sky.

Re: Emirates: first A380 full landing gear change (video)

My question would be, why change all five sets of legs? Do they have a sell-by-date in terms of landing cycles?

Massive search for missing aircraft, KZN pilot

Just read that a massive search and rescue was launched and is now in it's 5th day. A 61-year-old pilot who has 38 years of experience, took off from Newcastle last week and was heading towards the coast - possibly to land at St Lucia. So far the searchers have turned up empty handed.

Re: Seen in The Cockpit

The magic of high altitude aviation - jet exhaust gasses go from blistering hot to ice cold in 40 metres. Very cool.

Watching them from the plot in Pretoria I an always astounded by the way they just slowly "float" by.

I am going to take a lotto, as I think I have a better chance of winning before 31 March 2021.

After all those flying hours TGB still has a "new" shiny look about her. Boepie do you still use a camel to reach the front windows to clean them?

Re: B407gx ZS-ROB around Gauteng

Pilots growing up with ROB will never know the feel of fresh wind in your face, the smell of Castrol oil, and the throb and vibration of the power plant. Navigation was much easier, just a map over your knee and reference points on the ground. A GPS?? Never heard of that.

Re: Jayawijaya B732 dropped thrust reverser and veered off runway on landing

Pulling a loaded aircraft out of a soft off-runway area will be a challenge. The stress on all three landing gear must be enormous to cope with the friction of the soft earth quick stop.

Re: Malaysia Airlines MH370 B777-200 Missing (239 onboard) Update: debris found off Mozambique and on South African beac

It is not for a lack of searching for some wreckage, just such a huge expanse of ocean to look through for such a small target. In years to come, the evidence of wreckage may be found, but by more than luck than anything else. I read in this last week of the recent discovery after 70 years, of a mis...
